MRI – magnetic resonance imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a modern and highly accurate imaging diagnostic test designed to assess the condition of the internal organs, tissues, bones and nervous system of dogs and cats. This examination does not have any harmful ionizing radiation effects on the body.
When is a magnetic resonance imaging performed?
MRI is recommended when other diagnostic methods, such as X-rays, do not provide enough information or when an even more detailed and accurate image is required. This examination is often used to diagnose various neurological diseases.
What are the cases to perform MRI examination?
1. Neurological problems:
• MRI allows to assess the condition of the brain and spinal cord, so it is very useful in cases of seizures, head injuries, back pain, neurological disorders or suspected tumours.
2. Spine and spinal cord diseases:
• It is a very effective way to identify herniated discs, spinal cord injuries and/or lesions, as well as other back problems.
3. Tumours and other formations:
• MRI is excellent for localizing and assessing tumours, their size, spread, and tension in surrounding tissues. It therefore helps plan surgical treatments or chemotherapy.
What you should know before MRI examination?
• General anaesthesia: it is usually required to ensure that the pet is completely still during the examination. It is necessary to obtain accurate and high-quality images.
• Preparation for examination: do not feed the pet for 8-12 hours before the procedure, do not give water for 2 hours before the procedure to avoid possible complications during anaesthesia. Veterinarian will provide detailed instructions on how to prepare for examination.
• Examination duration: MRI examination usually takes between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the patient’s condition. After the examination, the pet may need time to recover from anaesthesia. The pet is returned conscious to the owner after the procedures.
• Information for Veterinarian: in case of any concomitant diseases or taken medications, it is necessary to inform the Veterinarian before the procedure..
When to see a Veterinarian for an MRI examination?
If you notice the following symptoms of your pet:
• Pain of unknown origin or neurological symptoms
• Signs of head injury or sudden changes in behaviour
• Swellings, tumours or other unexplained changes in the body
• Acute or chronic disorders of the musculoskeletal system
• Unexplained blood test abnormalities
In all said cases, MRI can be an indispensable diagnostic tool allowing to determine the causes of health problems accurately and prescribe appropriate treatment.
