MRI – magnetic resonance imaging
What is magnetic resonance imaging?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the newest, most advanced and safest radiological techniques in modern medicine. MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to produce detailed images of internal organs and soft tissues. This test does not expose the body to harmful ionising radiation (radiation).
Magnetic resonance imaging is suitable for examinations of the brain, spine, joints, lower leg, ankle, pelvis, urogenital system, abdominal organs, etc., without and with contrast material.
Purpose of magnetic resonance imaging
MRI is indispensable for determining the condition of various organs of the body and possible abnormalities:
- Various brain pathologies (brain tumours, effects of circulatory disorders, blood spills, abscesses, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, developmental anomalies, etc.);
- Various pathologies of the spinal cord (intervertebral disc herniations, circulatory disorders of the spinal cord, developmental anomalies, fluid accumulations, oncological diseases, etc.);
- For the detection of oncological diseases of various soft tissues, for the assessment of spread – metastases, and for the diagnosis of lymph nodes and vascular conditions.
- Pathologies of the bone and joint system (muscle and ligament injuries, tears, ruptures, inflammations, pathologies of the menisci of the knee joint);
Preparation for and conduct of magnetic resonance imaging
- Do not feed the animal 10-12 hours before the MRI and do not give it water 2 hours before the MRI;
- The animal shall be anaesthetised;
- Total visit time: 60 to 90 minutes.
- The examination is carried out by appointment only.
